Diwaniya in Ramadan: A Social Tradition Filled with Joy

Kuwaiti society is renowned for its many distinctive qualities and customs, which add a unique charm to its people. Kuwaitis are well known for their hospitality, and this trait is closely associated with “Diwaniya” or “Dewaniya”, as it’s considered a social heritage especially during the holy month of Ramadan.

In the past, diwaniyas were characterized by simplicity and traditional character, but now each diwaniya has its own distinctive character and form that is compatible with progress in various aspects of life. This is especially evident in the use of lighting systems, microphones, and display screens that have become a major part of many diwaniyas.

The Origin of the Name

The term Diwaniya is derived from the word ‘Diwan,’ which in the era of the Rashidun Caliphs, gave rise to a new term in the councils of rulers, where the Caliph’s council was called ‘Diwan al-Khalifa.’ From the word ‘Diwan,’ the Diwaniya emerged, which was later used and spread in the Arabian Peninsula.

Diwaniya as a Social Institution

In Kuwait, Diwaniya appeared as a social institution, performing the same function as the old Dewaniya. Diwaniya is known in Kuwait as a place designated for receiving guests from friends, relatives and acquaintances, in order to exchange conversations or sometimes to make decisions between families or social gatherings.

Diwaniya was a room attached to the house, but isolated at its entrance from the rest of the house. It was born with the formation of the country 300 years ago, as the number of Diwaniyas at that time did not exceed ten, unlike today, where there are numerous. Diwaniya attendees are mainly keen to wear Kuwaiti dress.

In the past, offices used to hold public events, marriages, funerals, and banquets. Now they are also used for playing cards, watching television, matches, and other contemporary events.

Best Materials for Diwaniya Sofas

Although Dewaniya is considered one of the oldest Kuwaiti customs, it has adapted to new shapes and styles, as many modern furniture and different decorations have entered it. It generally consists of low sofas arranged in an L or U shape for people to sit on.

Among the best materials that are preferred to be used in upholstering furniture and sitting rooms, and the most practical and comfortable, are: cotton of all kinds and coarse woolen fabric.

Wall and Floor Colors Used

As for the colors of the Diwaniya wall, it is preferable to use calm and neutral paint, but a clear color must be added to the Majlis in order to achieve contrast in the interior design. Marble can be combined with wood and used as wallpaper.

It is preferable for the floors to be usually made of wood or marble, but it is important that the marble does not contain engravings, decoration, or many lines.

Dewaniya and Ramadan

The month of Ramadan has special memories for everyone. Ramadan has its joy and distinctive qualities because it is associated with goodness, generosity, practicing religious rituals, and waiting for the joy of Eid. Ramadan, experienced by young people or the elderly, leaves in them its memories that differ from childhood memories.

Gatherings always amplify the joy of Ramadan. Therefore, Dewaniya has a strong presence during the holy month.

Diwaniya in Kuwait is known for serving the pre-dawn meal (Suhoor), and as an extension of the Diwaniya’s role in Ramadan, some families invite a religious scholar to read from the Quran, narrate the Prophet’s biography and traditions, provide advice and guidance, and answer questions from the attendees.

Dewaniya activities in Ramadan are not limited to religious customs only, as the Kuwaiti people are distinguished by their charity. Throughout the month, Diwaniya is not devoid of tea, Arabic coffee, and sweets, which makes the Diwaniya full of familiarity and social cohesion.

Ramadan Diwaniya Design: Creating an Inviting Space for Social Gatherings

Ramadan 2025 is about to be all about community and forging a spiritual connection with your social circle. The Diwaniya is integral to the social gatherings that enhance your Ramadan experience and it’s important to decorate it with all the elements typical in the holy month. Creating a Ramadan Diwaniya design depends on more than just these aesthetic elements, it’s about creating an atmosphere that embodies the connection between family, friends or neighbors.

Here are some tips to design a Diwaniya that is both warmly welcoming and spiritually:

Depict tradition with a modern twist

The Diwaniya is a deeply traditional setting so by mixing its purpose with the gatherings of the holy month can enhance its sense of heritage. Low seating, floor cushions and ornate rugs combined with a modern touch like adding sleek lighting fixtures can create a cozy atmosphere that all your guests enjoy.

Create the right ambience with lighting

Warm, soft lighting can set the mood for a nice gathering between family and friends. You can also add string lights as they give a magical touch during the evening. If you have a courtyard or outdoor space, you can transform the area into a nice retreat for suhoor or iftar gatherings by using fairy lights or hanging lanterns.

Incorporate some Islamic symbols

What makes a Ramadan Diwaniya different from an ordinary one is the spiritual significance of the holy month. By adding some elements like calligraphy art of Quranic verses or a small prayer corner with an ornate prayer rug, you can remind your guests of the month’s spiritual side.

Create a calming color scheme

The color of the furniture you use in your Diwaniya has an impact on the mood of your guests. Calming palettes promote relaxation and are good for meditation and reflection so make sure to choose pastel colors like beige, mint green or light shades of blue. You can also add a dash of metallic gold to add a touch of contrast and elegance.

Promote communication through the seating arrangement

Most Diwaniyas are arranged in a circular or semi-circular pattern so that all guests can enjoy each other’s company and have fruitful conversations with a sense of unity. It’s important to choose comfortable seating options for your guests between cushions and sofas to accommodate the long stay.

Add fragrance for a sensory experience

Scent plays a powerful role in setting the tone for your Diwaniya. Consider using natural fragrances like oud, amber, or rose, which are often associated with Ramadan. Incense sticks, essential oil diffusers, or scented candles can infuse the space with a soothing aroma that enhances the overall experience.

Assign a space for food and drinks

The main factor of any Ramadan Diwaniya is the food and drinks during both iftar and suhoor meals. You can create a corner for all the delicious foods you’re serving in a buffet-style setup or a low table for sharing meals. If the cutlery you use is traditional and Arabesque, it makes the dining experience all the better for your guests!
